Is there any difference between a Log Cabin and a Log Home?

A Log Home is any structure built with logs, while Log Cabins are typically smaller. Actually, most people use the names interchangeably so it is okay to say log home or log cabin.

There are different styles of Log Homes. The styles are based on the types of construction and design.  Here we will start with one of the most authentic and popular styles which is the Full Scribe style.

Full Scribe Log Homes

This style of home features logs that have cut grooves which are fitted and secured to the ones on the bottom.  These log homes are known for the strength and resistance. They are more expensive than other styles of log cabins/homes.

Post and Beam Log Homes

Post and Beam Log Homes use logs as structural support with vertical long posts which carry horizontal logs on the top.  This style of log home utilizes less logs compared to full scribe log homes and are very popular.

Chink Log Homes

This style of log home was among the first styles of log homes built.  Logs are stacked on each other and gaps in between are filled with "chink" (mortar) to fill in the voids.

Timber Frame Homes

This is a great alternative to log home construction and shares similarities with the Post and Beam style, however timber frame features a square shaped profile unlike post and beam which is known for its round profile. Also, this style can look like a conventional home on the exterior while having exposed wooden beams in the interior.

Modular Log Homes

Modular Log Homes have become a very popular and cost effective option. This type of log home is pre-fabricated and built in sections at a factory and later assembled at the final destination site. Customization is limited as they are mass produced, yet many people are very happy with this type of log home.
